Most every leader finds themselves in a place of both leading and following. How do you lead while following? How do you follow well? Here are my favorite 5 tips for leading while following.
Build Relationships. Relationships are invaluable at any stage in life and leadership. It’s not simply about what you know or what you’re capable of doing, but who you know, who you work well with, and who can help you get to the next level.
Do Work. Do great work! Build a reputation for always getting the job done and getting it done with excellence. If you want future leadership opportunities, then be the best follower you can by doing great work.
Listen and Learn. Work hard to be a lifelong learner. Who wants to be led by someone who knows it all and does not listen to others? Don’t expect to get the opportunity to lead if you aren’t listening and learning. Be your leader’s #1 fan and best teammate. Anything you learn from your leader will help you down the road.
Lead Well. When you do have opportunities to lead, don’t let them go to waste. Be faithful in the small things. Prove yourself as a leader by leading well in the times you’ve been given. Be confident and take advantage of the chance to shine as a leader.
Be Patient. Sometimes it takes awhile for some new venture to come along. Be careful not to push your way into leadership too quickly. Others love working with a team player, so demonstrate that you are willing to be that team player who can be content to wait when needed.
