Fully God and Fully Man: The Bread of Life

April 3, 2013 By henrydutton

Jesus is Fully God and Fully Man

Read John 6:22-71

Kids say the funniest things. During a summer of camp, a young girl refused to drink any water at recreation, even though it was a scorching day. When my teammate asked her about this, she explained that she was afraid she would gain weight if she drank the water. You see, several of the girls in her community were getting pregnant, and her mother told her, “It must be something in the water…”

Kids say funny things all the time, but another joy of working with them is that kids aren’t afraid to ask tough questions. During the same week, I was teaching about how Jesus is 100 percent God and 100 percent man. Suddenly, one of the kids raised his hand and exclaimed, “How can Jesus be 100 percent God and 100 percent man? That equals 200 percent! That doesn’t make any sense.”

In today’s passage, we can see both truths clearly. Since Jesus grew up in the region of Galilee, many people could attest to the truth that he was, in fact, human and that he had grown up from a boy into a man (v. 42). Just a few verses prior, we read stories of Jesus feeding the 5000 and walking on water. In verse 61, Jesus demonstrates omniscience. This is an attribute unique to God. No matter how you look at it, the truth remains the same – Jesus is both fully God and fully man.

Because Jesus is 100 percent God and 100 percent man, he alone is uniquely qualified to be our “bread of life” and to keep us from perishing. Because he is a man, we know can know that he identifies and sympathizes with us, and because he is God, we know that we can trust him. Do you trust God completely with your life? Do you fully believe the truth about Christ? If so, do your actions match up with your beliefs?
