For the past few months, I’ve been working on Bible study, spiritual direction for camp, details about our content, and unpacking some tough passages for kids. Many times, the things we are trying to teach are difficult for adults, much less kids!
I’ve spent a lot of time in Romans 12:1-2 with words like living sacrifice, holy and pleasing, spiritual worship, conform, transform, and discern and God has been teaching me a lot about what it means to walk in these truths.
It’s easy to read these verses and think about picking myself up by my bootstraps and doing great things for God! But, God keeps teaching me that’s not the point. By the mercies of God, because of Jesus, I am declared holy and pleasing. It’s not something I have to earn or even could earn if I wanted. Only by surrender — offering my whole life, my whole self, all my insecurities and failures, hopes and dreams — only by surrendering all to him, do I present my life as a living sacrifice — to the one who has declared me holy and pleasing to Him because I am His child!
I’m a recovering perfectionist, a people-pleaser. As much as I have head knowledge of gospel truths, my heart wants to still try to earn those things. For me, daily surrender is listening to God say, “STOP!” and trusting in Him alone to continue to work in my heart.
What is that daily surrender for you? Maybe it’s to STOP TRYING, or maybe it’s to remember IT’S NOT ABOUT YOU, or maybe it’s to TURN FROM SIN or SELF, or maybe it’s to RELINQUISH OTHER GODS. Whatever it is, be inspired by the good news of Jesus Christ. He alone saves, by the mercies of God, so surrender.
