There are so many aspects of kids ministry that can be used as connection points. There are bible studies, worship, and fostering relationships, but one very important aspect is missions. Teaching kids to look outside of their day to day reality and step out of their comfort zone can be powerfully impacting.
There are lots of local ministries and non-profits that your church can partner with. Everything from collecting canned food items, serving meals, to donating clothing can be a great way to get kids involved in sharing Christ’s love with others. One of the best ways to get your kids ministry to be more mission minded is to partner with a local missions organization. Getting families involved in serving on an ongoing basis really teaches kids the importance of sharing their faith.
There are a myriad of organizations that your church can partner with. Sorting food at your local Second Harvest, or serving meals as a family. At my church near Nashville, we work with a ministry called Room in the Inn which offers up our building as a place to sleep during the cold winter months. We also serve them dinner which is such a great opportunity for families and kids to serve together.
Getting kids involved in serving others is always a great thing. You can hand out piggy banks to your preschoolers and have them give change to a certain charity or missions organization. Start a food drive and have church members put canned goods behind their cars in the parking lot and have the kids go pick all of them up during their Sunday morning classes. There might even be somewhere that needs some flowers planted or weeds pulled. Gather some families together and serve the organizations in your community. There are so many options to get kids involved.
So take a look around your community and see what missions organizations fit the mission and values of your church. Adopting a missions organization will create an atmosphere that you are always in your mission field. Living on mission is as simple serving those in your community, and any opportunity to share that with your kids ministry is worth it.
